NZ Education System

New Zealand’s education system is straightforward and structured. Children typically begin formal education at the age of 5.

School Calendar

The New Zealand school year is divided into four terms, each lasting approximately 10 weeks, with a two-week holiday break in between.

Term 1:
Late January to mid-April

Term 2:
Late April to early July

Term 3:
Late July to late September

Term 4:
Mid-October to mid-December

Curriculum

Most schools in New Zealand follow the national curriculum (NCEA), though many also offer alternative pathways such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) or Cambridge (CAIE) programs.

NCEA

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand’s main qualification for senior secondary students, offering a wide range of flexible courses with both internal and external assessments. NCEA is recognized by universities and employers in New Zealand and internationally as a valuable qualification for further study or employment.

IB

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized qualification known for its rigorous academic standards and a holistic, internationally-minded approach. It is offered in over 150 countries, providing students with a well-rounded education.

CAIE

Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) is the world’s largest provider of primary and secondary qualifications. It offers a structured pathway of exams: IGCSE in Year 11, AS in Year 12, and A2 in Year 13, with exams at each level.
